FACULTY POSITION in Nashville, TN

Position Purpose

This position is a full-time tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. The primary job responsibilities include teaching 3 undergraduate courses per semester, including all levels of Sculpture and 3D Foundations, and serving as coordinator for all 3-D studio areas.  The individual hired will also maintain an active record of studio production, take part in professional organizations and participate in university advising and committee work.

 
Qualifications and Requirements

Qualified applicants must have a terminal degree in Sculpture and 3-D related studio practice, be knowledgeable in the history and criticism of a wide range of Sculpture and Inter-media practices, and have evidence of an active exhibition record and university-level teaching experience—preferably 2 years beyond a teaching assistantship. The successful candidate must be an excellent teacher, committed to higher education and have the ability to relate to students with interests in art, art education and design.

 
Skills and Abilities

 
Knowledge of a variety of fabrication techniques and equipment, specifically power tools for woodworking, welding, and construction of forms for plaster and resin casting; some familiarity with ceramic processes is a plus
Ability to oversee equipment-intensive studios and implement best practices related to current health and safety policies
Expertise in incorporating technology into undergraduate teaching
Ability to develop and grow the 3D area within the broader context of a studio arts/design program
Proficiency with Macintosh computers and basic design software
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
Willingness to obtain and maintain HazMat certification to meet departmental EPA compliance standards
 

Experience

 
1-2 years of college level teaching experience.

 
Education

MFA in Sculpture

 
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

            Requires, sitting, repetitious finger and wrist movement, constantly requires speaking clearly, hearing conversations, hearing (with acuity), seeing near and far with depth perception and color vision. Occasional heavy lifting of at least 50 pounds.

 
Job functions

            1.  Teach minimum of 18 credit hours per year.

            2.  Oversee the 3-D facilities and equipment.

            3.  Ongoing participation in departmental student advising and recruiting.

            4.  Active involvement in departmental service activities and university committee work.

            5.  Engage in scholarly activity and professional development.

 
Closing Date

            Consideration of candidates will begin in February 2012 and continue until the position is filled.
